A Justice of the Peace is appointed by the Attorney General, on the command of the Governor. As such, they are required to swear under oath that they will:

‘perform conscientiously, responsibly, and in accordance with the law, the duties that the Law imposes on Justices of the Peace’ and ‘assist in the administration of justice and in the maintenance of peace, order and good government in the State’ (DoJ, Special Appointment of a Justice of the Peace).

JPs are subject to the provisions of the Justices of the Peace Act 2004, which may be amended from time to time. Here is the most recent version
